India’s Firmness over Doklam Region

India’s  Firmness over Doklam Region

Doklam region in Sikkim has been an area of contention between India and China. India has shown her firm commitment to preserve her territorial integrity and to face any territorial challenge from external forces. China in the past two months has been consistently mounting pressure on India to withdraw her troops on Doklam region. Doklam is of strategic importance for both India and Bhutan and the construction of road on Doklam region ( as China dreams) will be a direct threat to the territorial integrity of both India and Bhutan.

China has followed “String of Pearls” policy under which she wants to surround India from all corners and the construction of road in Doklam region can be treated as a part of the “String of Pearls” policy of China. China followed a psychological war over India in which she sometimes gave the memories of 1962 war, or sometimes warns Modi Government to suffer dire consequences. To provoke India, China sometimes warns to enter into Laddakh region of Kashmir. China openly props up the most wanted terrorist Hafiz Sayeed and even uses Veto power in declaring him an international terrorist.

India’s foreign minister Sushma Swaraj has given a clear statement in which she pointed out that war is not a solution to any dispute and the Doklam dispute will be solved soon through bilateral talks with China. She also affirmed that India’s soft and argumentative attitude should not be treated as her weakness and India cannot be put under pressure by any external power. India wants peaceful relations with her neighbours, but the neighbouring countries should maintain their limitations.

India’s stand over Doklam is not merely related to border dispute but it will also decide whether would be the sole Big Brother in Asia and she would be able to pressurize any country according to her wish. But India has also started developing her strategic pillars against China’s hegemonism and started building friendly relations with Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam to counterbalance Dragon’s teeth.

But the Doklam standoff came to an end on 28, August, when both India and China agreed to withdraw their forces. Doklam clash continued for around 72 days, which was marked by neither peace, nor war but an state of uneasy peace between the two Giant countries. By the Doklam standoff, India has given a strong message to China that imperialism is no longer helpful to enhance image of a nation and bring world peace.
