Rohingya Refugees in India
Government
of India is planning to deport Rohingya refugees as they can pose security
problem in India.Rohingyas are originally Muslim people, who originally belong
to Myanmar, but during the Buddhist Muslim clashed in Myanmar, the entered
India as refugees. Around 40,000 Rohingya refugees are residing in India
illegally in different states in India, in which they are in majority in Jammu
and Kashmir (around 10,000).
India is a
signatory of neither 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees nor
1967 Protocol and there India is free to take its own course in refugee problem
for the purpose of national security reasons. A high profile Minister in Modi
Government said that their registration in UNHCR was irrelevant. We are not
signatory to accord on refugees.
But although
India is a signatory of neither 1951 Convention Relating to Status of Refugees
nor 1967 Protocol, every countries are required to observe the principle of
non-refoulement, which prohibits countries to deport refugees forcefully in any
other place where they have well founded fear of being persecuted on the ground
race, religion, caste, sex or place of birth. Therefore, the deportation of
Rohingya refugees is likely to happen after successful and peaceful talks
between Modi Goernment, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
India
believe in “Atithi Devo Bhavah” and India has excellent record in human right
protection to both her citizens and non-citizens in her territory.India always
observe the international principles and protocols and hence, Indian Prime Minister has decided
to visit Myarmar to resolve the Rohingya refugee problem.
